Harold R. Schroeder founded our law firm as a solo tax practice in 1949. Barney J. Heeney, Jr., joined the firm in 1951 and J. Robert Groff became an associate with the firm in 1955. The firm was known for many years as Schroeder, Heeney, Groff & Coffman. Mr. Schroeder died in 1986. Mr. Heeney retired in 1989, and Mr. Groff the following year.

H. HURST COFFMAN received his law degree from Washington College of Law, American University, Washington D.C., in 1973. S. LUCKY DeFRIES received his law degree from Washburn University School of Law, Topeka, Kansas, in 1978. He received a B.A. in History and Political Science from Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas, in 1975. Lucky was the staff attorney in charge of the Sales and Use Tax Litigation Section of the Kansas Department of Revenue from 1979 through 1983, and teaches the State & Local Tax course at Washburn University School of Law. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America under the category of "Tax." Lucky is the Past President of both the Tax and Administrative Law Sections of the Kansas Bar Association. He is on the Executive Committee of the National Association of State Bar Tax Sections and served as its Chairman during 2002. Since 1995, Lucky has also served on the Secretary of Revenue's Advisory Council. He is Past Chairman (1999 & 2001) of the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce, and currently serves on the Board of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry. R. AUSTIN NOTHERN graduated, magna cum laude, from Washburn University School of Law, Topeka, Kansas, in 1964. He received an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University in 1967, where he was Graduate Editor of the Tax Law Review. He graduated from the University of Colorado with a B.A. in Political Science in 1960. Austin was an instructor in Taxation and Real Estate Planning at Washburn University School of Law for over 10 years, and he served two terms as a member of the Kansas House of Representatives. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America under the categories of "Tax" and "Trusts and Estates", and is a Fellow of the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel. SUSAN KREHBIEL WILLIAM received three degrees from the University of Kansas: a B.A. in English in 1973, a B.S. in Accounting with highest distinction in 1981, and a law degree in 1990. She has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1983 and practiced in an accounting firm in Lawrence, Kansas, for ten years. Her prior experience also includes banking and association work. Susan edited the chapter entitled "Setting Up My Books" in the Kansas Solo and Small Firm Handbook published in 1995 by the Kansas Bar Association. An article she wrote, entitled "A Worksheet Approach to the Direct Method Statement of Cash Flows", was published in the March 1990 volume of The Practical Accountant. Susan is a member of the Kansas Bar Association, the Topeka Bar Association (Treasurer 1994-1996), the Women Attorneys Association of Topeka, and the Public Accountants Association of Kansas. JEFFREY A. WIETHARN received a B.S. in Business in 1989 and a law degree in 1992, both from the University of Kansas, where he was Associate Editor of the University of Kansas Law Review (1991-1992). Jeff was a Research Attorney for Chief Judge Mary Beck Briscoe of the Kansas Court of Appeals from 1992 to 1994. He wrote an article entitled "Deferred Like-Kind Exchanges under Internal Revenue Code Section 1031" which was published in the Journal of the Kansas Bar Association in August 1999. In 1996, Jeff received the Topeka Bar Association Outstanding Young Lawyer Award, and he was a member of the Leadership Greater Topeka Class of 1999. He is a member of the Topeka (Director, 1997-1999) and Kansas Bar Associations, and The Missouri Bar.
